PRIVATE OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

Handwriting & Fine Motor

Does your child struggle with handwriting?
Is it messy or illegible?
Do they struggle to keep up with their peers?

Are you tired of waiting for support?

Or wishing your child had more input?

Using various standardised and non-standardised assessments and observations, sessions can take place in school and at home. Sessions are fun, enjoyable and allow for creativity and games to engage and motivate your child with their handwriting and fine motor skills.

Joanna is a registered Occupational Therapist (OT) who has worked in different capacities with children most of her adult life. Her journey led her to re-train as an OT and she has worked in Paedatrics since qualifying. Her previous experience includes specialist seating, home adaptations and equipment provision in schools and at home.

Her love of art and creativity has led her to integrate this into OT and specialise in handwriting and fine motor in the field of Paediatrics.

She has undertaken specialist training with the National Handwriting Association, and Griffin OT. She offers the following battery tests as part of her overall observations and assessments:

  •  DASH 2 (Detailed Assessment of Speed of Handwriting) which helps identify functional handwriting difficulties and provides relevant information for intervention planning. Suitable for age 8-25 published in 2024.

  • Beery-Buktenica Developmental Test of Visual-Motor Integration, Sixth Edition (BEERY™ VMI) which helps assess the extent to which individuals can integrate their visual and motor abilities.

  • Assessment of Handwriting Function by Bunty McDougall, the Happy Handwriter who has over 30 years of experience in this field of OT.

Joanna is registered with the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT) and the Health & Care Professionals Council (HCPC).

Assessments can take place at home and at school. Intervention (therapy) can be carried out during school hours, which gives Joanna an understanding of the level peers are working at.

Handwriting homework (10 minutes a day) is paramount to your child's success, as is their intrinsic motivation, and parental support and engagement.
